Senior Backend Engineer - Payments & Settlement
Senior Backend Engineer - Payments Platform
Our client is a Melbourne-based freight and logistics company running a payments platform that processes transactions across their network. They're looking for a senior backend engineer to own their settlement and ledger systems in production, and to lead a small team through the next phase of growth.
This is a permanent hybrid role.
What you'll do
You'll take technical ownership of the settlement and ledger systems - the core that every payment flows through. You design for reliability, handle the operational reality of production incidents on the payments side, and drive the technical evolution of these systems as the business scales.
You'll lead a small team of backend engineers. That means code review, setting technical direction, and working day-to-day with the people building the platform. You'll participate in an on-call rotation for payments infrastructure.
The stack is Go and Postgres. You'll build and maintain the services that sit at the foundation of the platform, and work across teams - product, infrastructure, operations - to ship changes that work.
What we're looking for
You've owned a settlement or ledger system in production. You understand the non-negotiables: correctness, auditability, the ability to trace a transaction from entry to reconciliation. You've debugged production incidents in these systems, built monitoring and alerting that catches real problems, and made technical calls about trade-offs between speed and safety.
You're comfortable with Go and Postgres at a systems level. You've used these tools to build infrastructure that handles scale and reliability demands.
You can lead without needing the title to precede you. You write code that other engineers learn from. You give feedback that makes people better. You think about what the team needs - whether that's unblocking someone or saying no to a shortcut that'll cost you later.
You live in or near Melbourne and can work hybrid - mostly from home, some days in the office.
The offer
Permanent contract, competitive salary, standard Melbourne tech benefits. You'll work with a tight team that owns what they build. The systems you'll touch process real money for a growing logistics business, which means the work matters and the problems are real.
How to apply
Get in touch with your CV and a note about a settlement or ledger system you've owned. Tell us what you learned from running it in production.
