Senior Backend Engineer - Payments Platform

Our client is a Melbourne-based freight and logistics company operating a payments platform built on Go and Postgres. The platform is growing fast, and they need a senior engineer to own the settlement and ledger layer in production.

This isn't a learning role. They need someone who has shipped critical financial systems before and can lead a small team of backend engineers while keeping the platform reliable and moving.

What you'll do

You own the settlement and ledger system end to end. That means you make design decisions, respond to incidents, and take responsibility for production reliability. You're not implementing a spec someone else wrote - you're architecting this layer and then building it.

You lead a small team of backend engineers. You review their code, set technical direction, and prioritise the work day to day. You're not a manager who stopped coding - you're an engineer who also leads.

You participate in the on-call rotation. When something breaks, you debug it and drive root cause analysis. You understand what happened and why, and you ship the fix.

You design and ship changes to the payment flows as the platform grows. You work with other engineers on the team to scale the system.

What we're looking for

You've built or owned critical financial systems before. You know how to think about settlement, ledger design, atomicity, and correctness. You've had to deal with bugs that cost money and you know how to prevent them.

You've led a small team of engineers. You know how to review code, set direction, and get people unblocked. You don't need to have "manager" in your title - but you need to have done this work.

You write Go or have shipped systems in similar languages. You understand Postgres or relational databases deeply enough to design schemas that won't fail under load.

You care about production reliability. You don't ship code and hope it works. You think about monitoring, alerting, and graceful failure.

You're based in or willing to relocate to Melbourne.
