Senior Backend Engineer - Payments & Settlement
Senior Backend Engineer - Settlement & Ledger Systems
Our client operates a payments platform processing real transactions in production. They've built core infrastructure in Go and Postgres, and now need a senior backend engineer who has shipped settlement and ledger systems before.
This is not a learning role. You'll own the settlement and ledger system end to end: architecture decisions, incident response, reliability targets, and the engineers who maintain it. You'll write code, lead a small team, and carry on-call responsibility for a system that moves money.
What you'll do:
Take full ownership of the settlement and ledger system. You make architectural calls. You own incidents. You're accountable for uptime and correctness. You design and ship features in Go against Postgres, working across the broader payments platform as needed.
Lead three to five backend engineers day to day. Code review. Set technical direction. Support junior engineers in solving problems and shipping work.
Participate in an on-call rotation. When things break, you respond and fix them.
What we're looking for:
You've built and operated settlement or ledger systems in a production payments environment before. You understand double-entry accounting, transaction isolation, and the problems that wake you up at 3am in fintech. You know the difference between "looks correct" and "provably correct" at scale.
You've led small teams. You write clear code and clear feedback. You know how to unblock people without taking over their work.
You care about reliability. You think about failure modes. You build systems to fail safely, and you respond to failures by understanding root cause, not by adding alerts.
You're comfortable in Go and Postgres. You don't need to be an expert in either, but you should ship production code confidently in both.
Why this role exists:
Our client has spent time hiring and training junior backend engineers. Now they need someone who can own critical infrastructure and help those engineers grow. They're not interested in someone learning settlement and ledger systems on the job - they need someone who's done this before and can move fast.
The work is concrete. You'll spend most of your time writing code and responding to operational problems, not in meetings. You'll ship features, fix bugs, and lead a small group of engineers.
If you've built ledger or settlement systems and want to own a production system at a growing payments company, apply now.
